Product Review: Yumpeez

When Margaret first contacted me about Yumpeez, I was excited for two reasons: first, this snack is made right here in Manitoba, and second, I got to receive samples of Yumpeez to review in person rather than getting the samples mailed to me. It was so lovely to be able to meet with her! I’m used to dealing with a lot of very nice PR people representing various food companies via email; being able to meet someone who works for the company is a total novelty.

Yumpeez are a tasty pre-portioned snack consisting of roasted yellow split peas tossed with seasonings. They are vegan, gluten-free, nut/peanut-free, soy-free, lactose-free, and certified organic. The ingredient list is simple and each bag of Yumpeez (1/4 cup serving) contains 120 calories, 1.5 grams fat, and 7 grams protein. They are also a good source of iron and fibre.

Beans and legumes are a fantastic source of nutrients and a wonderful source of vegetarian protein. The beauty of Yumpeez is that if you or your children aren’t too keen on the idea of beans, legumes, or vegetables, you can eat them as a snack instead!

The little peas remind me a lot of soy nuts, except that Yumpeez taste much better than soy nuts. Currently Yumpeez come in two flavours, Barbecue and Dill Pickle (new flavours are in the works to come out soon). I have never been a fan of Dill Pickle-flavoured anything, but I bravely gave the Yumpeez Dill Pickle flavour a try… and I really liked it! I prefer the Barbecue (I’ve always been partial to Barbecue flavours), but I would gladly have either flavour again.

These crunchy snacks would be perfect to munch on for studying for exams. They’re sold at the University of Winnipeg and would make for great brain-food during classes/ They would also be a really good way to sneak some vegetables and a high amount of protein into your kid’s diet, too.

There are a couple different kinds of sugar and sodium listed in the ingredients, but very small amounts of each are used. There’s only 1 gram of sugar and 135 mg sodium for the entire package. Pretty good for a crunchable snack. The flavours are very subtle, which I think is why I liked them so much. The boyfriend enjoyed the Yumpeez as well, and he remarked that they would taste great if the peas were marinated in the seasonings rather than dusted with the seasonings, as it would create a stronger flavour.

This kind of snack would be tasty thrown into a trail mix to jazz things up for your taste buds. If you need a protein-fix but want the flavour of chips, give Yumpeez a try!

Cammy- I agree, it makes me sad and grumpy too. There’s just no NEED for a ton of sodium. This stuff has just the right amount to add a nice bit of seasoning.

Cathy- They’re being sold in some health food stores, I believe. If they come near you, definitely give them a try! I bet your kids would really like them.

Sounds interesting. There is a severe shortage of savory snack bars in this world. I don’t really buy snack bars too often, but when I do, I’m always irked that their all sweet granola b.s. Perhaps I will look out for the Yumpeez next time I feel the need for an emergency snack. Sounds like an ideal snack for hiking / backpacking.
