What girl hasn’t watched Clueless and drooled over Cher’s amazing swivel closet with its computer database of all of her clothes? It’s incredible. And although there is an actual version of this coming to the market by FaceCake (squee!), I think it’s going to be some time before it becomes the norm in every household.

So in the meantime, I’ve created our very own Living in the Real World version of Cher’s closet from Clueless, spreadsheet-style (since I am ALL about the spreadsheets. Hello recipe database and income / expense tracking!).

It’s actually pretty simple, and shouldn’t take you anymore than 30 minutes to put together (depending on how many items you have in your closet).

Here’s how to create your own Look Book / text version of Cher’s closet:

1) Open an Excel spreadsheet. Create three separate tabs: Tops, Bottoms, and Other.

2) Create headings in A1, B1, C1, etc. of each tab to categorize your different clothing items. For example, in Tops you might have separate headings for Sweaters, Blouses & Button-ups, Long-sleeved Shirts, T-shirts, Blazers & Wraps, and so on. In Bottoms, you might have Pants, Shorts, Skirts, and in Other, you could have Dresses, Accessories, Shoes, Bags, etc.

3) Start inputting everything you own into the different categories! They should just be two or three word descriptors that will instantly tell you what the item is. It might be recognizable by an unusual colour, a pattern, the material – anything that will help you identify the item! I have everything from “green” (under my Tank Tops section) to “black and white polka dot” (under my Dresses section) to “blue with bow” (under my Shirts section).

4) Add more tabs or headings as you need. You might need an extra heading for Workout Gear, or you could add all of your jewelry in a new tab and separate it between earrings and necklaces and bracelets etc.

5) Refer to your spreadsheet when planning your outfits for the week. It is so much easier to take a look at a spreadsheet to be reminded of different clothes that you have than to open up every drawer of your dresser trying to find something! And at the same time, because you won’t be rifling through your drawers all the time, pulling out one item and stuffing three others back in there, your wardrobe *should* stay much neater and better organized (especially if you begin organizing your items into the same headings as you have them in your spreadsheet. Five times faster to find things this way!).

Keeping all of your clothes in a database is great for assessing what items you have plenty of and what items you may need more of in your closet. It can also help to remind you of items that you forget about, or it could give you new ideas for mixing and matching different pieces.
