How to manage a 60-hour workweek

calendar It’s time for another mini-series!

Ever since I started university, I’ve been working overtime. Between being a full-time student and working part-time, plus doing extra things like my kind of insane exercise schedule that I had throughout university and very regular blogging, my days were incredibly full. It’s only gotten fuller since I graduated last year.

These days I’m usually working in the 60-hour range. Working as receptionist at the vet clinic, being a communications specialist for a local health centre, and doing my other freelancing “on the side” business, plus the blogging (which, since I make a little bit of an income from, I consider “a job”), being Executive Director for The Food Label Movement (unofficially, since we are not yet a registered nonprofit) and taking my Certified Holistic Nutritionist diploma program all take up a good chunk of my time. Next week I will be working as coordinator for Fruit Share and quitting my vet clinic job (exciting!), so it will still be around the same amount of time each week.

The question is, how does someone manage a hectic work schedule? Small business owners as a general rule can work upwards of 70 hours a week; there are many other professions which also involve working late or on weekends. Especially with recent shifts in the economy, more and more people are required to find extra jobs to supplement their income. I bet that most of you are working over the usual 40-hour workweek!

Even though it can feel as though there’s a ton on your plate, it really is doable! As long as you keep your head and stay organized, you’ll be able to manage a 50/60/70+ workweek without too many headaches 😉

This mini-series will involve the following topics:

– Creating a consistent schedule

– Working with others

– Tools to help you manage yourself

– Building in time for a social life

– Managing your health with a busy lifestyle

Is there anything else you would like to see discussed during this mini-series? How many hours do you work each week? Do you find it difficult to manage?

I haven’t figured out how to fit it all in yet – living out of town makes it difficult to just get on my bike / go for a run (gravel roads – yuck). There’s always so much to do at home that I feel guilty leaving the long grass / horses / laundry to go to town to hit the gym. Peg that with a crazy work day and I just don’t have the energy to work out before / after a shift. HELP!!

I used to work 60 ++ hour weeks with the drive added in.. it is tough but you always have to make yourself a priority in there somewhere… schedule yourself in on your calendar & make it non-negotiable! 🙂

Man, you are one busy lady! Mine was all at one job – multiple jobs is tough!

The problem with multiple jobs is keeping track of all of them. And remembering what day it is and what job I’m supposed to be at, haha.

I agree about the non-negotiable aspect – that’s important to make time for YOURSELF!
