How to Wear a Poncho
Ponchos can be a lovely item to wear in the autumn and winter. In fact, you can also wear ponchos in the spring and summer! It’s a nice versatile piece (click here to check out how I wore it last week), but you do need to think carefully about your outfit when wearing a poncho. Ponchos don’t go with everything, so heed these tips before you start wearing one every day!
Tips for wearing ponchos:
- Choose a size and material that doesn’t overwhelm your shape. If you’re tall, you can get away with more styles and materials; if you’re short, like me, choose your poncho carefully. I have a beautiful cashmere poncho that’s not too long so that it drapes over my shape elegantly without drowning me.
- Wear something simple underneath. A basic button-up shirt or a simple tank top is perfect for a poncho. You want something that’s fitted so it doesn’t bulk up your poncho. Also, be cautious about the colors you choose and the sleeves: some ponchos will look better without sleeves peeking underneath them, and of course you don’t want to clash!
- Go for heels. Again, this is applicable if you’re under 6 feet tall 😉 High heels or heeled boots are perfect. Unless the poncho is of a very thin material and not too long, it’s a good idea to wear heels to make your legs look longer and to prevent you from looking like you’re dressing up in your mother’s clothes.
- Let the poncho be your statement. My poncho is a gorgeous bright blue – which means that I try to wear neutral colors around it! I like having just one or two statement pieces rather than having a mismatch of different items. This is completely a style preference, but in terms of wearing a poncho out to events or in professional settings, you definitely want to downplay the rest of your outfit. Choose some classic, simple jewelry and let your poncho do the rest of the talking.
