How you can get involved to improve food labels
Last week I shared with you all the very exciting project that I’m a co-organizer for: The Food Label Movement. Read last week’s article to find out more information about what the consumer advocacy group is all about.
This week, I want to let you know how you can get involved and where your dollar will go if you are so inclined to donate to The Food Label Movement or to become a sponsor.
The Food Label Movement has already been in the media several times. We were featured on Shaw TV a couple times and also spoke at the Food Matters: Growing Local 2011 conference earlier this year. We are looking forward to spreading the news and generating more media awareness in the future!
Getting involved with The Food Label Movement
– Sponsor us. You can be a Blue Label Sponsor, a Green Label Sponsor or a Gold Label Sponsor depending on the amount you’re interested in giving – check out our sponsorship page for more details!
– Leave comments. We want to know what you are interested in seeing changed on current food labels. Although Nicole, Adrienne and I are the co-organizers, the group is for everyone to have a voice. Let us know what you want to see changed about current labelling regulations and it could be added to our ever-growing list.
– Email us. Talk to us about how you feel about the organization and current labelling regulations. Tell us if you want to get more involved. You can either email me directly at sagan.morrow[at]gmail[dot]com, or you can email all three of us at thefoodlabelmovement[at]gmail[dot]com.
– Follow us on Twitter. We are @labelmovement, and we will be sharing the latest in food labelling news with you, as well as information about events that we are setting up, how you can sign our petition and more.
– Like us on Facebook. Again, we really want to hear from you! Send us messages on our Facebook page for everyone to see and get discussion going about brands and products you think need improvement, or to brainstorm ways that labels could be improved.
– Donate to the cause. You can do this via PayPal. We appreciate your financial support!
– Attend our events. We will have a variety of Winnipeg-based events in the upcoming months, so stay tuned to learn more. Contact us if you are interested in working with us and want to host an event in your own city.
– Sign our petition. Food labelling regulations are never going to change unless the people in charge see that we’re unhappy with the current state of affairs. Please sign our petition so that governing bodies will understand how serious the issue is and that we as consumers want to see real changes being made.
– Spread the word. Tell your friends, show us some link love, let everyone know that food labels are in desperate need of improvement and that we are now going to work together to create change! It’s up to us to inspire the changes.
Where will your donations go?
Your sponsorship and donor gifts are important to us. Unless we get your support, Nicole, Adrienne and I will be funding the entire campaign out of our own pockets, so we are incredibly grateful for any help that you can give us. Your donations will be put toward:
– Paying for pamphlets, brochures and other materials to generate awareness and to support the events that we host.
– Partial funding for conference attendance and to attract government and media attention.
– Financial backing of the entire campaign, including website maintenance and organizational compensation.
– Becoming an official non-profit.
Let me know if you have any questions, comments or concerns about The Food Label Movement, or if you are interested in getting involved. Share your thoughts in the comments section below!
It would be great if there is an accurate calculation of the right and healthy food ratio comparing to the nutrional/ingredient ratio on the back panel of our food items. Good luck to your cause, I’ll make it a point to spread this around.
Thanks so much Lauren! I really appreciate your help.
When you say ratio, what do you mean exactly?
I’d like “natural flavors” to be explained and broken down on labels. I’ve been doing some reading and I hear that “natural flavors” is just a cover up for trace ingredients that can still cause us harm (chemical, toxins, etc). I just followed you on the Twittah.
YES! “Natural flavors” is such a vague, meaningless term.
Thanks for the follow 🙂
