Nutrition presentation
I am delighted to announce that this afternoon I will be giving a presentation to inner-city youths at Fort Whyte about how to make nutritious choices at the grocery store, the importance of good health and my role with The Food Label Movement. Some of the main points of my presentation include:
– The current intake of sodium for the general population is 3,400 mg per day; nutrition labels would lead us to believe that we should aim for a benchmark of 2,400 mg per day but in reality we should aim for no more than 1,500 mg per day.
– 1 tsp of salt equals about 2,000 mg of sodium.
– Five of the best tips for grocery shopping are: 1) stick to the peripherals and choose whole foods, 2) look beyond “health halos”, 3) read the nutrition facts table, 4) read the ingredient list, 5) compare brands.
– There are at least 100 different names for sugar on ingredient lists.
– Eating well can help combat obesity, chronic disease, tooth decay, concentration and memory problems, sleeping and energy issues, and stomach and gastrointestinal upsets, among other things.
Wish me luck!
Love that you get to talk to youths!!!! Great post & yes to reading it all on that package!
Good for you! If “youths” mean “teens,” then good luck–a tough bunch when it comes to prioritizing nutrition. I ate like crap as a teenager, and wonder whether proper guidance would have helped… or would I have blown it off? I’ll be curious to hear how it went.
These are fascinating! I had no idea there are 100 different names for sugar. I’d love to see a copy of the presentation if possible Sagan. Very happy to discover your blog.
