The Food Label Movement: relaunched
For all you bloggers out there, you may have noticed lately that I haven’t been commenting on blogs nearly as much as I used to. A few of you have even asked me if I’m still reading your blogs. The answer is yes. Not as regularly as before, but I am still visiting your site and reading your posts. I love so many of your blogs; your stories, insights, experiences and the research and information that you share.
But as we all know, life gets busy.
The reason I’m not checking out your sites as regularly as before is because there’s a project I’m working on which I really feel needs more of my time than I was able to give it in the past. And that project is The Food Label Movement.
The Food Label Movement is an organization that I co-founded last September, and which we are now relaunching in an effort to truly try to effect real change.
We as consumers all have a basic right to know what’s in the food we eat. Unfortunately, food labels make it difficult for us to know. A lack of GMO labelling, a hard-to-read ingredient list and no differentiation between natural and added sugars are all major problems (among many others).
Even if you eat primarily whole foods, you still need to be able to understand how to read food labels. I once found partially hydrogenated oil in the ingredient list for a jar of cinnamon! So this absolutely affects each and every one of us.
The Food Label Movement is a consumer advocacy group to propel that change, to tell the government that we object to current food label regulations, and to urge them to make changes and improve the label so that we can be better informed as consumers. The July 2007 issue of Alive magazine notes that:
Besides pollutants on fresh produce, the national environmental group notes that 94 to 99 per cent of our exposure to cancer-causing and hormone-disrupting, persistent organic pollutants, such as PCBs and pesticides, come from diet.
The Food Label Movement is a very exciting project and although it will likely be years from now before we finally see changes in food labelling regulations, we need to make our voice heard now. That’s why I’m hoping that each and every one of you will get involved in and support The Food Label Movement.
Next week I’ll talk about how exactly you can get involved with The FLM.
Share in the comments section below the thing that frustrates you the most about current label regulations and what you would like to see changed – The FLM is a voice for every consumer, and that means you!
We matter, and what we eat matters. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.
This is great! *applauds*
And as you know, anytime you need a volounteer, drop me a line. But you might have to read my blog first. Just sayin’.
Your new blog look IS pretty! 🙂
I’m not sure if we’ll have any social events up and running before you leave, but I will definitely be recruiting you if we do stuff before you go away to study birds.
Booooooooo I’m going to miss you when you go.
I remember you writing about this in the past & I LOVE IT! OMG, so many frustrating things about food labels but I guess a big one – make it easy for the lazy people that don’t want to learn to understand it & at least maybe they will get a tiny understanding of what is healthy.. Honestly, those of us that do understand still have probs with some of it. It is much better that before but I am sure we can make it better! I do hate the dishonesty of the way they allow “fake names” for ingredients – you get what I am saying….
Jody, I love you. I whole-heartedly agree with everything you’ve said here.
Gooooooo Sagan! WOOT!
Thanks Sahar!

I love this!
Improving food labels is definitely a much-needed way to empower consumers to make better choices. The food industry keeps saying it’s all about “Personal Responsibility,” which drives me nuts, especially considering the difficulty in labeling (and marketing claims on packages). So to that I say: BRING IT ON, let’s make some change and level the playing field!
Exactly! So glad to have you behind us 🙂
I really like the concept of your website – would you be interested in potentially writing a guest post for us?
