Why it’s important to see your dentist regularly

Having good oral hygiene is one of those things that I take very seriously. Since I brush and floss regularly and take good care of my teeth (and since appointments can be expensive and the last time I went to the dentist, the person cleaning my teeth was very hard on them), I haven’t bothered to go to the dentist for several years.

And then one of my fillings fell out in August.

Until it happened, I had no idea that fillings could just fall out. Talk about scary! But apparently they only last 10 or 15 years, and then it’s time to get them replaced. Who knew?

I immediately made a dentist appointment to get it fixed. One consultation, many x-rays, one teeth cleaning, and two appointments to replace the fillings on each side of my mouth later, I’m now all up to date on my dental cleaning and out more than a full paycheque.

While I’m very pleased that all that really needed to be done was to get my old fillings replaced, I’m never going to let that many years go by again without visiting the dentist. It’s far too expensive and time-consuming to have to go to four appointments within one month to be the worth it! Besides, it’s also much better to catch things early on before they get out of control, especially when you consider that 80% of Canadians will be affected by gum disease at some point in their lives.

You are certainly right. You may feel that your teeth are fine, but it’s still necessary to see the dentist regularly because problems may exist without you knowing it and it can prevent situation like that to happen. ๐Ÿ™‚ Gum disease is a nasty disease, and this is cause by plaque and bacteria on our mouth that is not treated in its early stage. So practicing a good oral hygiene and visiting the dentist every six months will help prevent this kind of severe cases of periodontal disease.

Im lucky I think. It may also depend on where the filling is and possibly the size. I have had a small filling on the side of my tooth for about 20 years. I wasnt aware of that they were supposed to be changed out. Bummer that could get expensive!
