An accidental marriage

The Bride was married on Friday! It all went beautifully, even though a number of things occurred which could have potentially had disastrous consequences, including:

  • The hair stylist burning off an entire lock of The Bride’s hair with the hair curler.
  • The MOB arriving at the church 15 minutes after the ceremony was supposed to start… and she was the one with The Bride’s dress and jewellery etc. So the bridal party wasn’t even dressed by the time that the ceremony was set to begin.
  • The maid of honour (me!) and the best man getting married for all of about 15 seconds. It was the pastor’s first wedding. She pointed to the wrong lines for us to sign. Luckily the groom was responsible enough to read the document, and he realized that we’d signed on the wrong lines. Um, whoops!

We began our days at 8am on both Friday and Saturday and didn’t get home until well into the night on both days… actually, we didn’t get “home” until Sunday afternoon because Day Two of the wedding – the reception – was out of town, so we stayed there overnight. It was a very long and busy couple of days. But The Bride responded amazingly to just about every obstacle on her wedding day(s), laughing off much of it. We all had a really fantastic time. There were photographs and great food, awesome people and enjoyable speeches.

The MOB handmade the cute little hat I'm wearing!

At the reception itself, there was a (silent) video playing behind the head table of the wedding ceremony. The only people present at the actual wedding ceremony was the bridal party, parents and grandparents, so it was nice to have the video at the reception so that the other 150 people attending the wedding could “witness” the ceremony as well. But it was really funny to watch the video at the reception, because you can’t hear any sound and when the groom went to sign the document, he just stopped. On the video, it looks as though he’s suddenly having second thoughts and trying to get out of signing it. It’s only a few seconds later that he points out the crucial mistake to the pastor, and the best man and I quickly scratched out our previous signatures and signed on the correct lines. Thank goodness someone was reading that document!

The boyfriend looking down as the bridal party dances. He got a kick out of the accidental marriage.

I got teary during the ceremony and then again immediately when I began my toast to The Bride. For all that I’m not at all a “weddings” person, I suppose we all get emotional when they’re for people that we’re extremely close to.

My emceeing went very well, too, even though there were some last-minute changes to the arrangement of things which required a bit of an overhaul of my notes. All in all, it was such a joy to be there on The Bride’s big day(s). There’s something about being welcomed so completely into other families that is incredibly heartwarming.

…and now that I am finally relieved of all wedding duties, I think I need to sleep for a week. Weddings are exhausting!

How was your weekend?

The only time I was a maid of honor, the bride bought my dress for me, and the only thing I had to do was show up on time at a church I’d never been to (no rehearsal) and make the wedding cake (to serve about twenty people.) Even so, I was exhausted. You must be ten times as exhausted!

I hope the lovely couple has a smooth marriage, having gotten the bumps out of the way with the wedding. Much better that way šŸ™‚

That is one brilliant story and you can dine out on it for years! Bet the Bride never thought you’d get married before she did ;). And I love that hat! It looks very glamourous.
